MEET REPORT: Dunsfold Wings & Wheels 2015
August Bank holiday saw the third year in a row that the club attended the Dunsfold Wings and Wheels event in Surrey. This two day celebration of motoring and aviation gets bigger every year and is held where Top Gear is (was?!) filmed.
The weekend began on Saturday when Rob Wadrop (Rob-BPA) was selected by the Brooklands Museum to participate in the runway motoring display. Despite the rain coming in during the afternoon he was able to achieve a respectable 130mph down the 1.2km course; narrowly missing the record of 133 set the previous year.

Rob crosses the finish line at 130 mph !
On the Sunday the rain finally stopped and 13 cars headed to the airfield to display their cars on the club stand in the Wheels Zone. On arrival Paul F had an idea to position ourselves in a ‘V’ shape in honour of the Vulcan bomber that was due to display that day as part of her last season in the air. What we didn’t expect was that we would win the “Car Club of the Year” trophy as a result, especially with the effort and expense some other clubs had gone to. What made it more special was the Mazda MX5 Drivers club on the next stand coming second. A little karma for the commentator describing our cars as MX5s on the previous years drive past perhaps!!

S2KUK tribute to the last flying Vulcan. You'd need to see this from above to appreciate the effort we went to park these cars!
The day was a fantastic mix of exotic and historic cars on the runway and a spectacular air display. The flying kicked off with a minutes silence for those who were tragically killed at the Shoreham airshow. It was an eerie feeling with silence from such a large crowd, which was ended by a tribute flypast of a WW2 Curtis P40 Kittyhawk. Throughout the afternoon we were treated from everything from WW2 warbirds such as the famous B17 “Sally B” through to the awesome power and agility of the Typhoon Eurofighter. Sadly, the highlight of the show – Vulcan XH558 – was unable to attend due to weather conditions further north. So much for our formation parking tribute!

RAF Chinook. You would not believe a helicopter could do what this thing does.
There were a huge number of cars on the runway display organised by Brooklands Museum. These included the 1939 24 litre Napier-Railton right up to modern supercars and bikes. Our S2000 display on the Sunday was a little more sedate; four cars heading down the crowd line in convoy with other participants. Thanks go to Vicky (Laserlady), Nigel (Bradders39), Sue (Suzybee) and Tony (Tonytail) for risking the mud to show off their lovingly cared for cars.

Leaving the event was much easier than last time and several off us headed back to a BBQ at Vixen’s house in the heavy rain forecast for that evening.
We’re now looking forward to next years Wings and Wheels which we hope will have a bigger and better stand. How could we not go back to defend our winning Car Club award.

The Trophy!
